Beckon Lovely 12/12/12 - a reply from Amy Krouse Rosenthal

Way, way on back (months last forever around here), I sent a letter out to the internet-o-sphere, (and through the actual post) to Amy Krouse Rosenthal about the film she released on 11/11/11 (and then promptly retracted 5 days later).  A silly thing, a sincere thing, a sorta fangirl thing, a request.  To bring the film back! Pop on over and read it.  I'll wait.

Did you read it?  Well not too many days later I got this!!  A letter from Amy KR!

Beckon Lovely

Beckon Lovely

Included was a transcript of a TEDx talk she was going to deliver on 12/11/12 entitled 'Beckon Lovely and Save the World'.  Imagine my giddiness!  And yet, I had to keep it on the D.L. so as not to spoil her surprise.

So go on over and give her TEDxTalk a listen.  It's OK.  I'll wait.  I'm patient like that.

And now, it's time.  To make lovely.  To call it into your life, into your relationships, into your heart, into your words.  And what better time than now, in the Advent season, when lovely is all around us?   As we anticipate the coming of the light and the celebration of the coming of the Light of the world, Jesus.

Amy's call to action is to "Make the most of your time here" and I couldn't agree more.  Plant your post-its with me and let's bring on the loveliness!

Here's the lovely that Cora and I made together today, as gifts to bring loveliness to others.

Care

Caring is the thread that binds us, one to another. We have been so cared for, so blessed, so provided for, I can't help but to turn around and give that away again. It's being God's hands, feet, arms, and chef. (If God had a chef :) )

That being said, I found a great way to coordinate caring for others. CareCalendar.org is about filling the needs of others. Created to help coordinate care for their own large family it is now a wonderful (and FREE!) tool for others to turn and do the same. I signed up a fellow Mama from my MOMS club and church and am helping coordinate her meals when her new baby arrives.

It has great features, not just meals! A calendar that those with a code can log into to sign up for caring for the one in need, email reminders, the ability to update those who are caring with news, photos, etc. It's a fabulous tool! I can't wait to use it to care. Pass it on to your church, your MOPs group, your friends, your 12 step group, whatever! Just thought I'd share. 'Cause caring is sharing. :)

It's a lolhouse out there!

In case you aren't in the know, the LOL empire is spreading. On lolcats you can link over to many other types of lols. Here's a little sample of the types of lols you can enjoy: (click on the pix to go to the site)

For Cat lovers:

For Dog Lovers:

For the celebrity follower:
Look-alike lovers!:
For Politicos:

And so much more. Whoever thought of this was stinkin' brilliant! AND according to this article here with the company founder for the lol empire Pet Holdings, the original I Can Has Cheezburger was sold for 2 MILLION DOLLARS, but I found this particularly amazing "The family of sites is generating 3.3 million daily page views, and around 5 million unique monthly visitors. Total revenue per page is north of $0.80, he (Ben Huh, the founder) says." That's a lot of dough for laughs. The two dudes who created this (a blogger in Hawaii and his partner) are chillin on the island with their smooth millions right now! Live it up fellas!

Pirates don't tolerate trespassers either.

I had run in with trespassers last night (while I was already pissed about something) which ended in police coming to visit (I called them) to check out the house. Angry pregnant girl yelling the the front yard = not a pretty site. Yes, I was wrong. I hate saying it. I always have to say it. You were right. It was stupid and I was taking out on them the pissiness I felt for someone else. I wish I was a pirate and could make the punks walk the plank. It's Pirate day. Just so you know.

My pirate name is:

Mad Anne Cash

Every pirate is a little bit crazy. You, though, are more than just a little bit. You're musical, and you've got a certain style if not flair. You'll do just fine. Arr!

Memoires of an (American) Geisha

I am boggled. Seriously. I understand wanting to not have school loans to pay off, but this is insane. A woman, under the pseudonym Natalie Dylan, is auctioning off her virginity to pay for her schooling. She uses a pseudonym for safety reasons, but puts her face up all over the web...um. How does that work?

In Memoirs of a Geisha, the main character basically had the same thing happen to her and so this reminded me of that book. Dylan is quoted as saying,

"I don't have a moral dilemma with it."
"We live in a capitalist society," she tells us. "Why shouldn't I be allowed to capitalize on my virginity?"

Yipe! As for the obvious fact that this is prostitution, she is taking it to a place where it's legal to do this sort of thing. Nevada.

She's already earned her degree in women's studies and hopes to start a masters in Marriage and Family therapy. WHAT?! Would you want this woman trying to fix your marriage or family? And with a degree in women's studies, you'd think she'd learned a little bit more about women and how their bodies are not a commodity. I am flabbergasted. I'd like to be out of consumer debt and maybe have the house paid off, and Dickerson Rd is just a few short blocks away, but there are just some things that aren't worth it.

This sad case (and I say that because she obviously needs some help) of a woman undergoing all these tests to prove she really is a virgin, but what about the nasty guy (and yes, I think any person who pays money for sex is nasty and sick) who actually wins the bid? Is he going to be tested for STDs? How many times before she actually lets him touch her, since it takes awhile for some STDs to show up? What if he doesn't want to use protection? There are too many variables here!

At best (if you remove the moral issue, which I can't really and what about this being an intimate act between two people! How is an action winner intimate?), this is reckless and stupid, at worst, it's a violation of everything that human rights and women's rights advocates have worked against for years and shows a serious lack of respect for ones self. Plus the fact that it's being touted by it's proponents as a good thing, applauded as a savvy business move. Sheesh. How is one expected to bring a baby girl into this world?

On the other hand, maybe she's hoping for a book deal and a page turner of a thesis paper out of it.

Don't die Honey, but if you do (later...much later!) I'll turn you into a diamond

The Geek long ago made it known that he wanted to be cremated a long time from now when he dies. I thought this weird, since who will be in the grave spot next to me if he's in an urn, but in an effort to respect his wishes, I've been trying to accept this. Then today on a news site, I spied this article. It turns out that there is a company that will take your beloveds ashes and turn them into a diamond (created in a lab of course).

While this may seem morbid, I would much rather have my hubby as a sparkling reminder close to my heart than as a dust collector on the fireplace mantle.

For the not so dead, there is also the option to take some of your hair and have one made. Think about it. I have 6 siblings and if we each gave some hair to make a stone for our Mama, how COOL would that be?! Just a thought.

It's been like a deserted wasteland in terms of my pals blogging. I asked the geek about it. His reply? "It's too hot to blog."
Maybe so.
