A new skill (or at least hobby. I'm not that skilled at it yet.)

Tatting. Here's what I've been attempting to learn...
Tatting is not so easy and as Beth said, not that much fun. I am only making enough for my project! (and no it won't be in green. This is a practice run)

The frustration lies in the fact that there are very few good FREE patterns out there for tatting. It's becoming a lost art form. So my patterns are made up out of my head or from looking at someone else's work. Since I'm not so great at this, it makes for a lot of ripped out (or cut off in this case) work. :( Does anyone do this?

I remember my grandmother tatting (I had never even heard the word!) and, you're right, it's becoming a lost art. It's beautiful, though! And, even your practice piece is beautiful! :-) I can't wait to see more projects!

"Lost art - schmost art"....just do a google search for tatting and you will get literally millions of pictures and website devoted to tatting. And most of these people I have met or chatted online. There are thousands of tatters all over the world meeting and chatting online. There are several Yahoo groups on tatting. Even Google groups and other online servers that host tatting groups so that you can connect with other tatters.

That phrase "Lost Art" has no meaning, because it has been found once again!!!!(this applies to other needleworks you might think "lost")

Hi! It's awesome to see another tatter learning their way through this fabulous art! There are TONS of free patterns out there; just like Tatman said.

You are welcome to visit my blog and you will see a "jillion" links on my right sidebar for tatting blogs, techniques and patterns...many of the pattern links lead to other pattern links! There is a whole wide world of online tatting just waiting for you to jump in and enjoy! :)

That first bit of learning how to tat can be a bit hard, but keep with it and it will really grow on you.

Please keep looking for free patterns. Tatman was too humble to say he has at least 50 of his own patterns linked from his blog. He has great patterns--I have worked a lot of them. Google for the Online Tatting Class too. that's an excellent source for free patterns and techniques.

The three before me said it all and they are only a tiny part of the tatting community. Each of us has tons of links to other tatters, patterns, how-to sites, tutorials, supplies....globally. We're all part of bringing this fabulous art back to life and making it even better!

But you do have to practice for it to get easier. (simile) Your edging looks excellent for a beginner!
